Ashley’s Self-care Routine for Wellness

My name is Ashley Smith, and like Victoria, I am living in recovery. My diagnosis requires a lot of attention. I commit a major part of my daily routine to self-care practices that help me cope. Most days I journal, take naps, reflect on my higher power, and listen to positive messages. Sometimes, I walk. Also, I support peers at work. These activities empower me and make me feel better.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve kept a journal. My writing is my outlet, creative self-expression, and coping skill. I keep a few journals. My daily reflections depict my plans and mood. Journaling helps clear my thoughts. This is important because my thoughts could turn into self-defeating thoughts easily. Journaling helps me stay focused, positive, and provides stress management. Because I enjoy writing a lot, I also keep a blog, Overcoming Schizophrenia.

Like my journal the blog is therapeutic. On the blog, I share my challenges and victories in recovery. I like to encourage peers and caregivers to stay hopeful on their journey to recovery by managing self-care and developing coping tools. Getting rest is another one of my coping skills. My recovery demands a lot of rest to regroup and calm thoughts.

I intentionally make time for naps. Whether I’ve taken a nap or not plays a role in my mood and energy levels. Therefore, I aim to ensure I get enough rest. My sleep patterns are also indicators of early warning signs that require attention because they can announce a flare up in symptoms. In addition to getting good rest, I enjoy praying.

I believe words hold power and therefore I say my prayers aloud and expect good things to happen to me. I love my bond with the spiritual world because it helps me stay positive and hopeful about my recovery and future endeavors.

Other positive activities I do regularly include listening to self-development and entrepreneur talks. These motivational talks remind me of my drive for wellness. I love studying ways to improve my wellbeing and learning strategies to develop myself. I listen to motivational speakers all the time. I study them because I also want to motivate more people through talks because I enjoy supporting others. And, as I provide pointers to help people, I’m also reinforcing that motivation to help myself.

Lastly, walking is another one of my stress management and self-care activities. I walk at least once a week. I enjoy my walk in the park. I love the atmosphere and sunlight. This clears my mind and helps me create more goals to target.

By utilizing my routine, this helps prepare me for work. I work as a peer counselor in recovery, otherwise known as a certified peer specialist. My job is to share my experience and empower peers to develop coping skills to manage their recovery. Also, I take medication and engage in therapy. All these activities help me manage from day to day.
